Nov. 15, 2007
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami swimming and diving team heads to Atlanta this weekend to participate in the Georgia Tech Invitational, Nov. 16-18, against six other schools at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. In addition to Miami, the field consists of four Atlantic Coast Conference opponents, Duke, N.C. State, Florida State and host Georgia Tech as well as two non-conference opponents in LSU and Florida Atlantic.
“We are really looking forward to this weekend,” head coach Christie Shefchunas. “The girls have been swimming so well all fall and they’re excited to compete against a great field of teams.”
Miami has started the fall season with a 5-1 record in dual meets, with wins over Florida International, Florida Gulf Coast, Villanova, Houston and Florida Atlantic while Miami’s lone loss came on Oct. 19 at FSU. This weekend’s meet will be the second time this year UM will go up against FSU and FAU.
“This meet is the same format as the ACC Championships, so it will give our freshmen a chance to get experience in this three-day format,” Shefchunas said. “Both the swimmers and the divers have been performing well and are excited and ready to make a statement this weekend.”
Four different Hurricanes won a pair of events in the team’s 165.5-132.5 win over FAU in the team’s most recent dual meet, Nov. 9. Annika Saarnak, Britta Boesing and Kelly Peloquin each picked up two wins on the swimming side while Brittany Viola swept the diving events going up against five divers from FAU.
Action begins Friday morning in Atlanta when the preliminary round of seven events begins at 10 a.m. before the finals start at 5:30 p.m. Friday’s individual swimming events include the 50- and 500-yard freestyle and the 200-yard IM events, while the two relay events scheduled are the 200-yard freestyle and the 400-yard medley. The two diving events scheduled to take place Friday are the women’s three-meter diving event and the men’s one-meter diving event.
All events in the invitational will be swum as prelims and finals with the exception of the 1,650-yard free. Each swimmer may swim in four individual events and unlimited relays.
