UM Track and Field Teams Head to ACC Indoor Championships

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s and women’s track and field teams will travel to Clemson, S.C. for the 2007 ACC Indoor Championships hosted at the Clemson Indoor Track and Field Facility beginning Thursday.

On the men’s side head coach Mike Ward and the Hurricanes are led by junior Tim Harris, the defending ACC indoor champion in the 800-meters who heads into the championships with the ACC’s fastest time (1:49.13) this season in the same event.

Junior Lance Leggett, who earned indoor All-ACC honors last season with a second-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles, currently has the second-fastest time (7.89) in the 60-meter hurdles.

Miami’s roster also boast one of the league’s top performers in the 5,000-meters in senior Jon Scheiner, who recorded a school-record time of 14:52.13 earlier this season, while freshman Cory Nelms holds the fifth-fastest time (7.55) in the ACC in the 55-meter hurdles.

Head coach Amy Deem, the 2005 and 2006 ACC Indoor Coach of the Year, and the Hurricanes will look for their third-consecutive ACC Indoor Championship on the women’s side.

The UM women’s team holds several of the ACC’s best marks this season including each of the top-three marks in the long jump. Senior Amy Seward, who earned All-ACC honors last season in the pentathlon, recorded the league’s top mark with a jump of 6.17 meters followed by senior Brenda Faluade’s mark of 6.11 meters and freshman Deandra Doyley’s jump of 6.06 meters.

Faluade, an All-ACC honoree in the triple jump last season, also has the third-highest mark (12.89 meters) in the same event heading into the weekend.

Sophomore Viktoria Andonova, a 2006 Indoor All-ACC selection, heads to Clemson as the forerunner in the high jump with a school-record mark of 1.81 meters set earlier this season.

In the 55-meters, UM will be led by freshman Ashley Dukes, who recorded the second-fastest time (6.92) thus far in the ACC while senior Ginou Etienne, who finished second in the 400-meters at the 2006 Indoor Championships, has the second-fastest time (53.84) in the 400-meters this season.

Events are scheduled to begin Thursday at 1 p.m. with the women’s heptathlon and will conclude Saturday with the women’s 4×400 relay finals at 3:40 p.m.
