Men's Tennis Drops Second Straight at USTA/ITA Indoor Nationals

CHICAGO, Ill. – The 11th-seeded Oklahoma State men’s tennis team rallied from an early 2-0 deficit, winning three-straight singles matches en route to a 4-3 consolation round win over 14th-seeded Miami on Saturday evening at the Midtown Tennis Club.
With their second-straight loss at the prestigious USTA/ITA Indoor National Team Championships, the 26th-ranked Hurricanes fall to 4-3 in dual match play. The Cowboys (5-1), ranked 14th in the latest FILA team poll, bounced back from Friday’s 4-2 loss to sixth-seeded host Illinois to defeat the Hurricanes, and advance in the consolation bracket to face 10th-seeded Duke on Sunday.
The Hurricanes took the early 2-0 lead, earning the first point on strong doubles play in the No. 1 position by seniors Luigi D’Agord (Freeport, Bahamas) and Josh Cohen (Weston, Fla./Laurel Springs) and in the No. 2 slot by sophomore Daniel Vallverdu (Valencia, Venezuela) and junior Vivek Subramanian (East Brunswick, N.J.) – who went 2-0 in doubles play at indoor nationals.
Vallverdu used straight sets to dismantle third-ranked Ivan Puchkarov, 6-0, 6-3, in singles competition at the No. 2 spot to add another point for Miami.
The Cowboys then went on a tear, winning three straight singles matches at the No. 6, 5 and 3 positions to go ahead 3-2. But D’Agord kept the Hurricanes alive, claiming the No. 1 match over Oleksandr Nedovyesov, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, to knot the score at 3-all, with the No. 4 doubles match to decide the outcome.
In a tightly-contested competition, Dmytro Petrov clinched the match for Oklahoma State with the 7-6, 7-6 win over Subramanian.
