Hurricanes Take Home Gold and Silver in Women's One Meter and Men's Three Meter Diving

Chapel Hill, N.C. – The University of Miami women’s swimming and diving and the men’s diving squads finished the third day of competition at the ACC Championships with a score 256 to place fifth overall tonight at North Carolina’s Koury Natatorium.
Tonight’s diving events marked Miami’s first ever sweep in both the men’s and women’s competition.
After posting a fifth place finish in the preliminaries with a score of 297.90, junior Jenna Dreyer came back to blow the rest of the competition out of the water to capture her first gold medal in the women’s three meter diving competition. With a score of 364.15, Dreyer is now the first Hurricane in ACC history to win the three meter board. Tonight’s win also marked Dreyer’s second championship victory of the weekend.
Taking home his second gold medal of the championship weekend, freshman Ruben Ross displayed why he is a tough and consistent competitor as he took home the gold in the men’s one meter diving finals. After knocking down a 393.00 score in the preliminaries, Ross finished the evening with a score of 387.30 in the finals. He is now the second Hurricane diver in ACC history to capture both one meter and three events at the same conference championship.
Participating in their final three meter and one meter in an ACC Championship competition, seniors Heather Bounds and Derek Starks both took home the silver medal following tonight’s finals. Bounds registered a score of 353.25, while Starks came away with a score of 371.15.
Tonight’s swimming competitions saw impressive finishes by sophomores Magda Waszkiewicz, and Britta Boesing.
In the 100 yard breaststroke, Waszkiewicz captured a sixth place finish clocking in at 1:03.36. She finished the preliminaries at 1:03.30 to capture fifth place.
Boesing landed the seventh place finish earlier in the preliminaries with a time of 56.91, while touching the wall at 56.40 in the championship finals.
Katie Eason and freshman Kelly Peloquin also finished the evening with notable finishes. Eason clocked in at 4:29.43 in the 400 Individual Medley (IM), while Peloquin touched the wall at 1:05.14 in the 100 breaststroke. Both swimmers captured 14th place respectively.
Miami went away with the eighth place finish in the 400 yard medley relay with a time of 3:49.51. Leading the way for the Hurricanes was Boesing, followed by Waszkiewicz with Nancy Gajos and Kristen Pomerleau finishing in the end.
The ACC Swimming and Diving Championship will conclude Saturday with preliminaries beginning at 11:00 a.m. followed by finals at 7:00 p.m. Coverage of the ACC women’s swimming and men’s and women’s diving championships will be available on www.ACCSelect.com.
