Women's Volleyball Defeat the Demon Deacons in Four Games

Winston Salem, N.C. – The University of Miami women’s volleyball team defeated Wake Forest 3-1 (13-30, 32-30, 31-29, 30-23) tonight at Reynolds Gym. The Hurricanes advance to a 12-18 over record and improved to 9-12 in the ACC. The Demon Deacons fall 14-17 overall and 10-12 in the league.

The Hurricanes were led by sophomore Lauren Rinderknecht who stepped up with an outstanding performance on both the offensive and defensive end. The outside hitter posted her first double-double of the season with a career high 16 kills and 10 digs.

“Lauren came in and made a huge impact with swinging on the outside”, commented head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch. “I was please with the way she played smart and aggressive.”

Junior Ciara Michel registered 14 kills with eight total blocks, while Jill Robinson led Miami with 43 assists and contributed 12 digs for her fourteenth double-double on the season. Sophomore middle blocker Angelica Ellis registered nine kills out of 16 attempts, along with four digs and three block assists.

“Ciara and Angelica were big on offense and very affective for us”, Lantagne Welch said.

On defense, Cassie Loessberg posted 14 digs, followed by Ann Gallo with 12 digs.

“I felt our defensive specialists passed extremely well to put us in a position to run our middles a lot throughout the match”, stated Lantagne Welch.

As a team, the Hurricanes came away with the win though only posting 54 kills and a .129 hitting percentage compared to the Demon Deacons’ 67 kills .217 hitting percentage. Both teams managed to register 69 digs, as Miami finished with 15 total team blocks over Wake Forest’s 14.5 team blocks.

“Overall, I felt we displayed a great team effort after going down in game one. It was a big turn around, and we showed a lot of character.”

The Hurricanes will play in their final match of the 2006 season as they face the 25th ranked Blue Devils of Duke Friday at 12:00 p.m. at the Cameron Indoor Stadium.
