Oct. 24, 2006
Coral Gables, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – University of Miami junior Jessica Steward (Mystic, Conn.) has been named the Golfweek Women’s Player of the Week following her dominant performance at the GSU/Pelican Preserve Invite in Ft. Myers, Fla.
Steward posted an eight-stroke victory finishing with a seven-under-par total of 209 (69-68-72) establishing a University of Miami 54-hole scoring record. The old UM record of 212 was set by Penny Hammel in 1982 and later equaled by Tracy Kerdyk (1987), Julie Brand (1992) and Tina Miller (2005).
The win for Steward was the first of her collegiate career, and the first by a Hurricane since Miller won the Ryder Collegiate Championship in 2005.
Steward led wire-to-wire increasing her lead after every round. She took a two stroke lead after the first round, extended it to six strokes after two rounds and ended the tournament with an eight stroke victory over Texas Tech’s Gloriana Soto and Iowa’s Karla Murra.
