CORAL GABLES, FLa. – In conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness month, the University of Miami volleyball team will participate in the “Dig for the Cure” program, by dedicating one home match to raise money for breast cancer research benefiting the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The Hurricanes have selected the match against Wake Forest, October 22 at the Knight Sports Complex.

The Hurricanes, along with 24 other participating schools will designate one home volleyball match in October (Breast Cancer Awareness Month) or November. Individuals can pledge money per dig earned by their team in the match, or can make a flat donation to the cause.

“Bringing awareness and support to breast cancer and its research is always important”, said head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch. “Many of us have already had experiences with people that we care for or through others that have been affected by breast cancer. It is a great opportunity to come together to support this very deserving cause.”Anyone wishing to donate can call the University of Miami marketing department at (305) 284-2678. The money raised by each team goes directly to the Komen Foundation’s local affiliate in their community.

The “Dig for the Cure” program spearheaded by University of Charlotte 49ers head volleyball coach Lisa Marston, whose mother is a breast cancer survivor, established the program to honor other breast cancer survivors. Marston’s goal is to raise a combined $50,000 and bring student athletes together for a great cause who care about their communities. This will mark the fourth year that coach Marston and her team have dedicated a home match to raise money for breast cancer research.

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36. Today, the Foundation is an international organization with a network of more than 75,000 volunteers working through local affiliates and events like the Komen Race for the Cure® to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease. Together with its Affiliate Network, corporate partners and generous donors, the Komen Foundation has raised more than $740 million for the fight against breast cancer.
