Hurricane Volleyball at Home for Second Annual Alumni Match

Sept. 7, 2006

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com)- The University of Miami women’s volleyball team will play in an exhibition and welcome back former players to compete in the second annual Alumni Match Friday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. in the Knight Sports Complex.

Head Coach Nicole Lantagne Welch and the rest of the women’s volleyball squad are excited to compete in a match against a few former record-setting Hurricane players. They welcome back seven alumni set to play Friday evening including Jamie Grass, Elizabeth (Biz) Tyson, Marcela Gamerra, Kristin (Kristi) Sprinkel, Carrie Frash, Karla Johnson, and Mallory James.

“We are looking forward to getting back on the court, Lantagne Welch states. “We want to take this opportunity to improve as a team and better ourselves in competition. It is a great time for it and will help us prepare to host our home tournament next weekend”.

Miami now 2-4 into the season believes this match will be a great opportunity to improve their style of play, and are looking forward to stepping up their competition for the season.

“We hope to make some big strides in our sideout game tomorrow. We need to pass consistently, but also better the ball so that we are always putting pressure on our opponents with our third contact”.

The Hurricanes will compete against the alumni in a three out of five match.

“The alumni match was just started last season, as we finally had enough alumni, “Head coach Lantagne Welch comments, “We expect to have it as a yearly tradition and it is a great way to bring back our former players and have an opportunity to catch up with all of the `Canes.”

The Hurricanes will play tournament host next week Sept.15-16 in the Hurricane Invitational. Miami will take on Florida A&M Friday at 7 p.m. The next day they will face a double-header against Jacksonville at 12:30 p.m., and Loyola Marymount at 7 p.m. at the Knight Sports Complex.
