CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricansports.com) – The University of Miami women’s volleyball team went head-to-head in their second scrimmage yesterday afternoon at the Knight Center, in preparation for their third season in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

“We approached today’s scrimmage differently. We were more mentally prepared to play. I saw better execution and was impressed with our positioning on defense. [The scrimmage was] much cleaner, and played at a much higher level. I am very pleased with the progress we’ve made.”

Notable standouts in today’s scrimmage included redshirt junior middle blocker, Ciara Michel and senior setter, Jill Robinson. According to Lantagne Welch, “Ciara was very effective in both attacking and blocking. She was making herself available which helped us to get her the ball more. That was fun to see. Jill played well and made a lot of good things happen out there.”

This weekend on August 25th the Volleyball team will begin their season on the road as they head to Tuscaloosa, AL to play in the Alabama Tournament featuring Alabama, Kansas, and Alabama A&M.

The following weekend, September 1st and 2nd, the Hurricanes will continue on the road to play in the MSU (Michigan State University) Invitational featuring Eastern Michigan, Villanova, and Michigan State.

“The tournaments are very critical because it’s your chance to earn significant wins against opponents outside of the ACC. These matches weigh heavily on NCAA tournament decisions that come at the end of the regular season.

The Hurricanes open their home schedule at the Knight Center on September 15th, at 7 pm against Florida A&M.
