Hurricanes Hire Estes as Assistant Basketball Coach

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s basketball program has hired Butch Estes as an assistant coach Head Coach Frank Haith announced today.
In making the announcement Haith said, “I am excited about the addition of Butch Estes to our staff. He brings a wealth of basketball experience to our program. I am confident that he will become a successful part of the foundation we are building at Miami.”
Estes, who has recorded a 338-267 record in 21 years as a college head coach, joins the Hurricanes after spending the last three years as the head coach at Miami-Dade College where he compiled an impressive 68-24 record. After going 17-13 in his first season with the Sharks, Estes’ squads were 27-5 in 2004-2005 (Southern Conference Champions) and 25-7 this past year. Estes was the head coach at Guilford College for four years prior to joining Miami Dade.
A graduate of North Carolina, Estes began his coaching career in 1971 as a graduate assistant at The Citadel. He followed with assistant coaching positions at East Carolina and Rice before being named head coach at Presbyterian College in 1980.
After compiling a 92-63 record in five seasons at Presbyterian, Estes was named head coach at Furman. In nine years at Furman, he posted a 135-122 mark and led the Paladins to a conference title and two second place finishes. His 1991 team was selected to play in the NIT, the school’s only appearance in that tournament.
