Miami Hosts Season's Final Home Meet This Weekend

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami men’s and women’s track and field teams will host the Miami Elite Invitational, April 15, at Cobb Stadium in <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Coral Gables, Fla. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
The event will be the final home meet of the season for Miami which will honor its seniors in a ceremony prior to the track events. Field events will begin at 12:00 p.m. with the track events beginning at 5 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children under 17.
The Miami women are ranked third in the nation in the latest Trackwire25 rankings and are led by the most successful senior class in school-history.
Miami’s senior class of Darden (Harrisburg, Pa.), Charlette Greggs (Miami Northwestern), India Ransom ( Largo, Md.), Melanie Schultz (Davison, Mich.) and Carly Brown (Coral Gables, Fla./Ransom Everglades) has never lost a conference meet winning all four indoor championships (2 – BIG EAST, 2 – ACC) and all three outdoor titles (2 – BIG EAST, 1 – ACC). The group will attempt to capture its fourth straight outdoor title later this season.
The quintet has also led Miami to unprecedented success at the NCAA Championships placing in the top-5 at the last two NCAA Indoor Championships, and in the top-10 of the last two NCAA Outdoor Championships.
The UM men’s team is led by three 2006 All-ACC selections including sophomore Tim Harris (Miami Booker T. Washington), junior Roland DaSilva ( Margate, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) and sophomore Lance Leggett (Bartow, Fla.).
Harris won the 2006 ACC Indoor title at 800-meters and finished 10th in the event at the NCAA Indoor Championships. He currently has the third fastest time in the nation this outdoor season in the 800-meters (1: 48.84). Leggett was runner up in the 60-meter hurdles at the ACC Indoor Championships and has the 12 th fastest time in the nation in the 110-meter hurdles (13.89). DaSilva earned All-ACC honors with a third place in the heptathlon at the ACC Indoor Championships.
Added to the schedule is the Robert Castillo Master’s Memorial Mile Run. Castillo was a master’s national track and field champion and placed in the top five three times at the World Masters Track and Field Championships. He was struck and killed by a motorist on October 23.
