CORAL GABLES, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Fla.– The University of Miami volleyball squad topped Miami-DadeCollege, 3-1 (30-15, 26-30, 30-18, 30-25) in a spring scrimmage held Friday at the Knight Sports Complex. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
“This was a good first test for us this spring,” said head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch. “I was very pleased with our hitting efficiency as a team.”
All nine healthy Miami players contributed in the win. Redshirt-junior Francheska Savage led the Hurricanes with 15 kills. Junior Jill Robinson and redshirt-sophomore Ciara Michel tallied nine kills each, hitting a team-high .538 and .500, respectively.
Freshman Lauren Rinderknecht also had contributed nine kills while junior Sara Duncan and redshirt-freshman Ashley Woods each chipped in six kills.
“Bridget [Bomhack] stepped in and was very solid in running the offense,” continued Lantagne Welch. “Our middles both scored efficiently and Francheska performed great in her go-to role. Lauren’s hard work this spring really showed in a great all around performance that started with excellent passing. Sara also shined especially hitting from the left.”
“We can now see more clearly some areas for us to improve on and although we did get better as the day went on, we want our blocking to be more of a force at the net. We still have a lot of work ahead of us this spring, but we have four weeks of practice and three more competition dates to help us get there. “
The Hurricanes, who are off for spring break, will return to practice next week before heading to the University of Florida for a two-match tournament Saturday, March 25.
