CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Miami’s offense backed up a two-hit performance by its pitching staff with three RBI triples in a 9-1 win against Bethune-Cookman in front of 2,204 at Mark Light Field Saturday night. The Hurricanes improved to 8-6 on the season while the Wildcats fell to 3-10.
UM starter Manny Miguelez improved to 2-1 on the season and gave up just one hit in six solid innings, striking out five and walking three. Dustin Blackwell was charged with the loss for Bethune-Cookman, giving up five earned runs on five hits in 3.1 innings.
Miami jumped to a 4-0 lead in the second on Roger Tomas’ two-run triple and a drive to center from Jon Jay that went of center fielder Jose Ortiz’s glove to score Blake Tekotte and Jemile Weeks.
The Hurricanes put up four more runs in the fourth. Dennis Raben led off the inning with his first career home run. Francisco Gomez spelled Blackwell after Weeks’ RBI triple put Miami up 6-0. Gomez balked and walked in two more runs to give Miami an 8-0 advantage.
Tekotte hit Miami’s third triple of the game in the seventh to score Tomas.
The Wildcats got on the board in the eighth when Spencer Hill scored on Marcelo Albir’s wild pitch to Drew Clark for the final 9-1 score.
Miami will look for its first three-game series sweep of the season Sunday with a 4 p.m. first pitch against the Wildcats.
Notes: Saturday marked the 2,501st game in a row that Miami recorded at least one hit in a game… the three triples was the most by the Hurricanes since the team hit three against North Carolina on April 16, 2005… Jay moved into a tie for seventh place on the all-time hit-by-pitch list after being plugged twice Saturday night and 23 times in his career, equaling Mike Fiore…
