Tim Harris Breaks School Record in the 800 Meter Run

Feb. 11, 2006

Boston, Mass. (hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami Men’s track team competed at the Boston University St. Valentine’s Invite Saturday afternoon. Tim Harris ran 1:47.99 in the 800 meter run to break an 11 year old school record. Harris was the top collegiate finisher and took second place overall.

Harris’ time was also an NCAA provisional mark, just .19 seconds off automatic qualification. That time also places Harris as the fastest ACC performer, coming into this weekend, and would be the fourth fastest time in the country.

The race was the third straight this season in which Harris was the top collegiate finisher or the winner as he was coming off back to back victories at the University of North Carolina Fast Times meet and at the Florida Intercollegiate Open.

The previous record was 1:49.09, set on February 5, 1995 by Ronald Thorne.

In other action at the BU Valentine’s Invite, sophomore Lance Leggett was the top collegiate finisher in the 55 Hurdles.  His time of 7.48 is just .1 off the NCAA provisional standard.  He finished second overall in the event.

Richard Bernard led the Miami milers, coming in at 4:17.09.  That time is a personal best and leads the team this season.  He finished 33rd in the event.

The Hurricanes compete again at the ACC championships February 23-25, 2006 in Blacksburg, Va.
