Hurricanes to Face In-state Rival Florida State Tuesday

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami volleyball team will square off against in-state rival Florida State Tuesday at the Seminoles’ Tully Gym. The match will be broadcast LIVE at 7:00 p.m. on the Sun Sports Television Network.
The Hurricanes (8-6, 3-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) return to action fresh off a pair of ACC matches against NC State and North Carolina. Miami defeated the Wolfpack 3-1 Friday evening before falling to North Carolina in four games the following afternoon.
Miami will continue to rely on the play of senior Karla Johnson, junior Jill Robinson and redshirt-junior Frannie Savage. Johnson, who has led the ACC in kills per game for five-consecutive weeks, leads the Hurricanes with 4.98 kills per game. Over the weekend, Johnson averaged 4.62 kills, 3.12 digs and 1.00 blocks per game. Savage set a new career-mark with 19 kills against North Carolina and is currently averaging 3.52 kills and 0.95 blocks per game. Robinson tallied a career-high 19 digs against North Carolina and is dishing out 12.07 assists per game.
Also contributing defensively are redshirt-sophomore Ciara Michel and junior Ann Gallo. Michel leads the team with 1.16 blocks per game (64.0 total) while Gallo, who tallied a career-high 21 digs against NC State, is Miami’s digs per game leader with 3.76.
As a team, the Hurricanes are averaging 15.4 kills and 2.70 blocks per game.
Scouting Florida State…
The Seminoles snapped a three-match skid with a 3-0 sweep over NC State to improve to 4-10 overall and 2-4 in the ACC. FSU suffered two five-game heartbreakers to Georgia Tech and Clemson before falling to North Carolina on Friday.
The Seminoles are led by Kristen Rust and Andreza Santos. Rust is averaging 3.26 kills and 2.85 digs per game while Santos is knocking down 3.07 kills per game. Defensively, Summer Weissing leads the way with 4.24 digs per game. Gabrielle Rivera has posted 41 total blocks (6BS, 35BA) for a 0.95 blocks per game average.
As a team, Florida State is averaging 13.85 kills per game while posting a .178 attacking percentage.
Although the Seminoles lead the All-Time series 12-11, the Hurricanes swept the series last year. In their first meeting as members of the same conference the Hurricanes topped the Seminoles, 3-0, in Coral Gables on September 24th before winning a five-game battle in Tallahassee on October 20th.
