UM Wraps Up Striking Performance at Hurricane Invitational

The <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>University of Miami men’s tennis team concluded the 2005 Hurricane Invitational in impressive fashion Sunday sweeping all six singles matches as well as two-of-three doubles matches against in-state foe FAU at the NeilSchiffTennisCenter.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
For the second-straight day, the Hurricanes rolled through the singles’ field unblemished while winning all six singles matches in straight sets.
Sunday against the Owls, junior Josh Cohen, who is ranked 20th nationally in singles, downed FAU’s Kevin Obletz, 6-1, 6-0. The lone game won by Obletz marked the only game surrendered by Cohen in three matches during the tournament.
Junior Luigi D’Agord – ranked 26th – defeated David Demers, 6-1, 6-2, senior John Hoyes held off J.P. Bounassar, 6-2, 6-4, senior Tim Krebs – ranked 62nd – downed Mauricio Paiz, 6-3, 6-2, 100th-ranked senior Eric Hechtman upended Gianfranco Dossena, 6-1, 6-3 and sophomore Vivek Subramanian overtook Akin Akman, 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles, Krebs and Subramanian fell to Obletz and Demers, 8-5, Cohen and Hechtman cruised past Dossena and Paiz, 8-0 and junior P.J. Passalacqua and Hoyes defeated Bounassar and Akman, 8-2.
During the three-day, six-match tournament featuring FAU, Stetson and Georgia Southern, the Hurricanes won a total of 17-of-18 singles matches played while winning 16 of those 17 matches in straight sets. Miami also won eight-of-nine doubles matches played during the tournament.
