Coral Gables, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami men’s and women’s cross country teams travel to Gainesville to compete in the Gator Invitational on Friday, September 9 at the University of Florida Golf Course.
The men’s 8K race is scheduled for 8:00 a.m. with the women’s 5K race following at 8:30 a.m.
The UM men’s team is fresh off a season-opening win at the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish Invitational last weekend. Junior Tom Berry (Stanford, Conn.) led the Hurricanes posting his first career collegiate win.
The meet will be the first this season for UM senior Alex Brutvan (Boca Raton, Fla.). Brutvan, who did not compete last weekend, has been the Hurricanes top finisher in all 14 meets in which he has competed over the last two seasons.
The women’s team, which placed third at the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish Invitational, was led by freshman Melissa Hornor (Columbus, Ohio) who placed fifth overall.
The Gator Invitational will mark the first race this season for 2004 All-South Region performer Melanie Schultz (Davison, Mich.). Schultz, a senior, has recorded four meet wins over the last two seasons, and has been the Hurricanes top finisher in 12 of the last 13 races dating back to the 2003 season.
