Bounds Finishes Fifth on Platform at U.S. Open

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>MIDLAND, Tex. – University of Miami sophomore diver Heather Bounds finished fifth on the 10-meter platform at the U.S. Open Championships at the Mabee Memorial Aquatic Center in Midland, Texas over the weekend.

Bounds, a native of Austin, Tex., finished fifth out of 24 divers with 661.20 total points in the second day of competition at the national event.
Hometown favorite Erin Savas, representing COM Aquatics, claimed the gold medal by overtaking 2004 Olympian Cassandra Cardinell with 769.32 points. Cardinell totaled 757.08 points for silver, while Team Orlando Diving’s Brittany Viola took bronze with 746.40 points.
Bounds finished ahead of Florida State’s Courtney McClow, who came in eighth with 627.87 points.
USA Diving, who ran the U.S. Open, is the national governing body for the sport of diving.
Headquartered in Indianapolis, Ind., USA Diving conducts approximately 40 regional and national events annually, sanctions hundreds of events managed by its 350 member clubs and is responsible for training and selecting teams that represent the United States at international events such as the Olympic Games, World Championships and Pan American Games.
