Hurricanes Head to NCAA Zone Diving Championships

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami diving squad will head to the 2005 NCAA Zone Diving Championships that will take place Friday, March 11th through Sunday March 13th in the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. The diving championship meet will begin with the men’s one-meter springboard at 10:30 a.m. on Friday morning.

The top 13 men and 11 women will advance to the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships. The women’s NCAA meet will be hosted by Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind. March 17-19. Minnesota will host the men’s NCAA meet, March 24-26, in Minneapolis, Minn.

Freshman Jenna Dreyer and sophomore Heather Bounds will represent Miami on the women’s side, while senior Miguel Velazquez and sophomore Derek Starks will be diving for the men.

Dreyer, a native of Port Elizabeth, South Africa, was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship Most Valuable Diver after placing first on the one-meter board with a top score of 320.75 and second on the three-meter board with a score of 550.65. Dreyer finished just out of medal contention in the 10-meter platform, coming in fourth with a score of 388.20.

Bounds, a native of Austin, Tex., placed second on the 10-meter platform at the ACC Championships with a score of 423.75.

Velazquez, a Mexico City, Mexico native, was also tabbed the ACC Championship Most Valuable Diver after sweeping the one-meter (365.40), three-meter (613.00) and the 10-meter platform (574.85) at the ACC Championships.

Starks earned All-ACC honors when came in second in both the one-meter (350.05) and 10-meter Platform (569.55) events. Starks, a native of Mission Bay, Calif., also placed third in the three-meter with a score of 576.50.
