CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami swimming and diving team placed fourth in the first annual Matt Gribble Invitational Friday evening at the Norman Whitten Student Union pool. The event, which honored former Miami great Matt Gribble, fielded eight women’s teams, four men’s teams and six diving squads.

“This was a very successful meet,” said head swimming coach Mariusz Podkoscielny. “It honored a very great swimmer, a great `Cane, a great human being. It was great to see that we had solid attendance from some of the top ranked teams in the nation in this meet.”

Third ranked Florida and 16th ranked Penn State showed why they are one of the top 20 teams in the nation, with Florida taking first in 11 out of the 16 women’s events to amass 1,298 total points.Penn State came in second with 793 total points while placing in the top three in 10 events.

Colorado State came in third with 341 points followed by Miami with 202 points. Michigan State (114 pts.), Virginia Tech (111 pts.), Vassar College (65 pts.) and Florida International (45 pts.) rounded out the rest of the field.

On the men’s side Penn State claimed a commanding victory with 1,032 total points. Virginia Tech came in second with 437 points followed by Michigan State in third with 305 points. Vassar College came in fourth with 105 points.

Senior Katalin Ferenczi posted a lifetime best in the 100-yard Breastroke, posting a time of 1:07.66 for 13th place. Classmate Lindsay Knapp also had a strong showing. Likewise did freshman Casey Heffernan and sophomore Nancy Gajos.

Knapp came in the top 20 in the 400-yard IM (4:40.14), the 200-yard butterfly (2:12.29) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:09.02). Heffernan swam close to career bests in the 200-yard butterfly (2:15.41), the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.39) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.02) while Gajos swam a 1:02.12 and came in 19th place in her 100-yard back stroke season debut.

The diving portion of the meet, which’s scoring was separate from the overall score of the meet, saw Hurricane divers claim first place in both the women’s and men’s 1-meter and 3-meter events.

Freshman Jenna Dreyer had another impressive showing, sweeping the 1-meter and 3-meter boards with scores of 288.05 and 289.90, respectively. Sophomore Heather Bounds placed second in the 3-meter event with a score of 285.85. Florida’s Nicole Bolt placed second in the 1-meter with a score of 260.90 followed by Kentucky’s Taryn Ignacio in third with a score of 260.75. Bolt’s score of 282.30 in the 3-meter placed her third behind Bounds.

Sophomore Derek Starks claimed first place in the 1-meter board with a score of 329.40 followed by senior Miguel Velazquez in third with a score of 318.35. The roles were reversed in the 3-meter competition with Velazquez taking first with a score of 350.45 and Starks third with a score of 293.35. Texas A&M’s Eric Sehn placed second in both events scoring 322.40 in the 1-meter and 315.90 in the 3-meter.

“This meet was a great way for us to check where we are at this point in our training,” Podkoscielny further commented. “We’ve had an awesome 10 days of training after the holiday break. Even though we were tired, we still swam well.”

“After tomorrow’s dual meet against Florida, we have one more week of hard training before school begins and then we will have our eyes on ACC Championships that are 5 ½ weeks away.”

The Hurricanes return to action Saturday morning (Jan. 8th) at 10:00 a.m., when they host Florida in their final home dual meet of the season.
