Hurricanes Slated to Face South Florida on Senior Night

Coral Gables, Fla. – The University of Miami volleyball team will honor five seniors in their final home match of the season against South Florida Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. at the Knight Sports Complex.

The Hurricanes will recognize seniors Jamie Grass, Mallorey James, Valeria Tipiana, Elizabeth Tyson and Ashley Youngs, prior to the start of the match.

Miami (16-9, 11-5 ACC) will return home after falling to Maryland, 3-1, in the quarterfinal round of the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships November 19th. The Hurricanes finished their inaugural season in the ACC ranked second, after being picked to finished seventh in the preseason poll.

Tipiana was named to the All-ACC First Team and continues to lead the Hurricanes with a 4.49 kills per game average. Junior Karla Johnson led all players with 22 kills and a .429 hitting percentage in the loss to Maryland and remains second on the team with 3.81 kills per game. Sophomore Jill Robinson runs the offense with 13.38 assists per game.

Defensively, the Hurricanes’ have relied on the steady play of Grass, who is averaging 4.47 digs per game, and Ciara Michel, who has recorded 132 total blocks (23 BS, 109 BA) this season.

As a team, the Hurricanes wrapped up ACC play ranked fourth in hitting percentage (.242), kills (16.06pg) and blocks (2.71pg). Miami was also ranked third in assists per game (15.18).

The South Florida Bulls head into the Knight Sports Complex after posting a 9-19 overall and 5-9 Conference-USA record. The Bulls come off a five game loss to St. Louis at the C-USA Championships November 19th.

The Bulls are led by Flavia Silveira and Michelle Stalbum. Both players are averaging 4.23 and 3.26 kills per game, respectively. On defense, Ashley Reavis leads South Florida with 3.00 digs per game.

As a team, the Bulls, average 14.74 kills per game and a .177 hitting percentage. They have posted 167.5 total blocks, compared to the 268.0 tallied by their opponents.
