Women's Basketball Lands Second Recruit in Early Signing Period

CORAL GABLES, Fla. –

The University of Miami and head women’s basketball coach Ferne Labati announced today the signing of LaToya Cunningham to a National Letter of Intent for the 2005-06 season in the November early signing period.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

 

Cunningham, a 5-6 guard from La Jolla Country Day in <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>La Jolla, Calif., is ranked one of the top 75 players at her position in the class of 2005 by the All-Star Girls Report. Last season, she averaged 12.2 points and 4.0 assist per game while shooting nearly 40 percent from the three point line as she led the Lady Torreys to their third consecutive California Interscholastic Federation Championship.

 

“LaToya is a tremendous athlete and an excellent team leader,” said La Jolla head coach Terri Bamford. “She has worked extremely hard on her basketball skills and with her leadership and work ethic, she should be very successful at Miami.”

 

Cunningham is the second player in this year’s class to commit to UM, joining Brittany Denson, who signed with Miami Thursday.

 

Denson, a 6-3 center out of Winter Haven High School in Winter Haven, Fla., is considered by most recruiting services to be the top post player coming out of the state of Florida and one of the best players in the country in the class of 2005.
