CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Junior forward Tamara James turned in 27 points and was one of six Hurricanes to score double-digit figures Wednesday night as the University of Miami women’s basketball team downed the Miami Suns, 105-59 in Miami’s season-opening exhibition game at the Convocation Center.

James, who went 11-17 from the field and a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line, led all UM players in scoring.

Freshman guard Albrey Grimsley also had an impressive outing, recording a double-double with 18 points and a team-high 13 rebounds in her first game as a Hurricane.

Senior guard Yalonda McCormick fell one assist shy of a double-double, scoring 14 points with nine assists on the night, while junior forward Tatjana Marincic added 11 points and eight rebounds off the bench for the Hurricanes.

As a team, the Hurricanes shot 48.8 percent from the field and 90.5 percent from the free throw line.

A pair of former Hurricanes led the Suns in scoring, with MeChelle Murray, a four-year letter winner at UM from 1994-98, turning in a team-high 14 points followed by 12 points by Chanivia Broussard, who spent four seasons at Miami from 2000-03.

The Hurricanes never struggled with the Suns, largely due to a 26-0 run beginning just under three minutes into the game that put UM up 33-9 with less than 10 mintues to play in the first period. Miami used that momentum to carry a 28 point lead in the half.

Miami would keep the Suns at bay for the remainder of the game, outscoring the Suns 55-37 in the second half to close out the game, 105-59.

The Hurricanes return for the final exhibition of the 2004-05 preseason, Saturday, Nov. 13 against the Premier Players at the Convocation Center at 7 p.m.
