Cohen Advances to Flight A Quarterfinals at the Crimson Tide Fall Tournament

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Sophomore Josh Cohen advanced to the Flight A quarterfinals with a pair of wins Friday in the opening rounds of the Crimson Tide Fall Tournament hosted by the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Cohen, ranked 76th in the nation in singles and playing as a No. 3 seed, downed Richard Johnson of Pepperdine, 6-3, 6-0 in the first round Friday morning before moving on to upend Wake Forest’s Andrew Hamar, 7-6 (4), 6-0 in the round of 16 later on in the afternoon.
Cohen will face Alabama’s Luigi D’Agord in the quarterfinals Saturday. Cohen defeated D’Agord in straight sets earlier this season at the ITA Southeast Region Championships.
Junior Eric Hechtman was forced into Flight A West Consolation bracket after falling in the first round to Virginia’s Marko Miklo, 7-5, 6-1. Hechtman was able to overcome Jacksonville State’s Vedran Sirola, 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of the consolation draw.
After advancing to the round of 16 with a win over No. 5 seed Irving Morales of Troy in straight sets, junior Tim Krebs was knocked off by Alabama’s Eric Molnar, 7-6 (6), 6-0 to move into the Flight A West Consolation bracket.
In Flight B singles, freshman Vivek Subramanian fell to Samford’s Stuart Misner, 6-4, 6-4 in the opening round while freshman Ryan Waits, who automatically advanced to the second round due to an injury to first-round opponent Robert Van Swelm of Troy, fell in the round of 16 to Pepperdine’s Alexis Rafidision, 6-1, 6-1.
Subramanian went on to upend Colorado’s Peter Bjork, 6-7 (4), 7-5, 10-3 to advance to the Flight B Consolation West quarterfinals while Waits drew a match-up with Eric Langenkamp in the Consolation North quarterfinals to be held Saturday.
Sophomore Neil Sehgal fell in the opening round of the Flight C singles tournament, coming up short against Samford’s James Bryce, 6-4, 7-6 (6) to move into the Flight C West Consolation bracket where he downed Mississippi State’s Jordan Jones, 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the semifinals.
In doubles play, Miami’s tandems of Hecthman and Cohen, Krebs and Subramanian and Sehgal and Waits each advanced in the opening rounds of the Flight A, B and C brackets, respectively.
