Q & A with Ashley Youngs
Oct. 26, 2004
Senior outside hitter Ashley Youngs has enjoyed time in the spotlight after leading the Hurricanes to wins over Florida Atlantic (Oct. 12) and NC State (Oct. 15). She set a new career-high with 16 kills against Florida Atlantic and led all-players with a 12 kill performance against NC State.
What are your interests and hobbies outside volleyball?
Any free time we have, go to the beach, hang out with friends, eat and watch random TV show with my roommate Joel.
Why did you choose the University of Miami?
Location. I love the sun. I grew up a Florida State household, so I think I shocked everyone by coming here!
What was your first impression of Miami?
I felt like I was at a country club or on a set of a movie. How many schools have palm trees lining the road ways?
Why did you start playing volleyball?
As a little kid I always played basketball and tennis. In middle school, I always played with the boys for most sports and would beat them. In 8th grade the varsity volleyball coach told me that I should try volleyball.
What is your best sports memory?
My sophomore year, our first year in conference play, Notre Dame came into town. It was a huge game. They had something like a 56 game win streak in the Big East. They were so cocky. We beat them in five games and the whole team was crying. It was a sign that Miami was on the map!
Do you have any superstitions before matches?
I always like to warm-up by the same people and the whole team is superstitious because we all stand in the same spots. Also Mallorey, Biz, Jamie and I have a cheer we have done since freshman year together, never missed a game.

What did you do this summer?
This summer I stayed in Miami and did rehab on my shoulder, all summer! However, I was able to leave for seven days and went to L.A. and attended and Athletes in Action Camp. It is a Christian camp for all NCAA athletes who want to grow in there relationship with the Lord and learn how to worship Him through their sport.
What are your goals at Miami both in and outside volleyball?
Being my senior year, I want to go places this team has never gone. I would love to win a championship and hang a few more banners in the Knight.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
I see myself on the sidelines at the Orange Bowl working for ESPN, broadcasting as the Hurricanes are playing for a national championship, being unbiased of course! Or just working as a sportscaster or in a newsroom somewhere warm and beautiful.
