Hurricanes Fall to Virginia in ACC Debut

Charlottesville, Va. – The University of Miami swimming and diving team were defeated by Virginia, 151- 125, in their inaugural ACC meet Friday evening at UVa’s Aquatic and Fitness Center.

Sophomore diver Heather Bounds took first place in both diving events earning 243.15 points on the 1-meter board and 282.90 points on the 3-meter board.

Freshman Lauren Shue had another solid performance in the 500-yard freestyle besting her previous time of 5:05. 84 with a 5:00.86. Shue took first place in the events, touching over eight seconds ahead of the second place finisher.

Sophomore Nancy Gajos touched first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.48 and took second place in the 200-yd butterfly touching at 2:05. 60

Senior Manoon Van Rooijen touched second in both the 50-yard freestyle (24.45) and the100- yard freestyle (52.46).

Freshmen Taylor McFarlane teamed up with sophomores Andrea Hughes, Nancy Gajos and Ashley Knapp for a first place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:37.52) to close out the meet.

The Hurricanes continue their two-day stay in the state of Virginia when they travel to Blacksburg for a Saturday match-up against fellow ACC newcomer Virginia Tech. The teams will hit the pool at 3:00 pm.
