Sept. 25, 2004

Coral Gables, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s volleyball team will try to make it four in a row when they travel to Blacksburg, Va. to take on ACC rival Virginia Tech on Sunday at 1:00 pm. The Hurricanes (5-3) come off their first ever ACC win– a 3-0 rout of Florida State on Friday evening.

Like Miami, the Hokies are enjoying their inagural season in the ACC after moving from the BIG EAST Conference this season.

“They’re our biggest rival, even when we were in the BIG EAST,” said senior co-captain Jamie Grass. “We’re ready to play Virginia Tech.”

The Hurricanes hold a 2-1 advantage in the series since the 2001 season. Last season, Miami won in three games on November 15th to seal their second consecutive bid to the BIG EAST Championship Tournament. Middle Blocker Karla Johnson posted a season-high .647 hitting percentage against Virginia Tech, landing 12 kills on 17 attempts with just one error.

Virginia Tech improved their record to an even 6-6 overall after a five game come back win over Florida State Thursday night.

As a team, Virginia Tech is ranked last in four categories in the ACC including hitting percentage (.180), blocks (1.82 bpg), assists (12.36 apg) and kills (13.79 kpg).
