Bounds, Starks to Compete at the 2004 Olympic Diving Trials

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami diving team’s Heather Bounds and Derek Starks will compete for a spot on the 2004 Olympic Diving Team as the UM divers take part in the 2004 Olympic Team Trials, June 7-13 at the St. Peters Rec-Plex in St. Peters, Mo.
Bounds, a freshman native of Austin, Texas will compete in the 10-meter individual and will pair with high school teammate Ashley Bourland of Ohio State in the synchronized events. She placed seventh at the 2004 Speedo American Cup in the 10-meter and with Bourland, took fifth in the syncro.
Starks, who was named the BIG EAST Most Outstanding diver in 2004 as a freshman for the Hurricanes, hails from Mission Viejo, Calif. He will team up with Beau Sydes of SMU in the 3-meter synchro, an event the two placed fourth in at the 2003 American Cup and sixth in at the 2002 National Diving Championships.
The 2004 trials are slated to begin Monday with the men’s platform prelims and semifinals at noon followed by the women’s platform prelims and semifinals at 7 p.m.
