Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Cold weather conditions are the likely forecast at this year’s Big East Conference Golf Championships being held in South Bend, Indiana at Warren Golf Club. Like last year, we will again be faced with some brutal weather. Last year that was a definite advantage to those teams from cooler climates, but this year, knowing the conditions will not be favorable, we will step up and play hard to put mind over matter.
Coming into the event, just like any tournament, you want to go out there, give it your best and hopefully your best is good enough to win. Golf is a tough college sport because you are taking an individual sport and turning it into a team effort. It is more difficult than one thinks to win a college event, whether as a team or an individual.
Last season, when I was five shots down to Notre Dame’s Katie Brophy going into the final nine holes of play, I knew I could do it. I had the confidence, I saw the line in my putts, and sometimes you just feel that you have got it- and those last nine holes I knew I had it.
I did comeback, and on the final hole, I made a good par putt to secure a tie with Brophy for the title. I was very disappointed that we did not go into a playoff, however, I was satisfied with the way I put it together in the end to tie for the win. That was last year…this year the Hurricanes are back in top form and ready to compete at the tournament.
As a team, we have finished in the Top 5 of every event with one win in March at the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational. We are going into the Big East Conference Championships as the number one seed again, but this time we are going there not only to win, but to dominate.
Camilla G. Hilland and Jazmin Cataldo bring their experience in tournament competition and know what is like to be faced with pressure-type situations. They, like all of us on the team, would love to finish the season with another win under our belts. Camilla, in her sophomore year, made it to the NCAA East Regional Tournament. She, like myself, knows what it takes to get to the NCAA tournament and hopefully this year we will make it as a team.
Already a standout, freshman Tiffany Prats brings with her the courage to never give up and to know she’s a strong fighter out on the course. Esther brings up to the Big East championship the gift of patience and hard work.
Finally, defending my title as Big East Champion, I bring forth the desire to go out there and win again. We will bring all of these great individual characteristics to the tee on Saturday morning to compete together as one team. This will be our second, and final, year at the Big East golf tournament. We have what it takes to put our one last final mark on the Big East Conference. Hurricanes love to make history and this weekend is the time for the Lady Cane Golfers to shine!
