Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Last weekend was a long tournament for me and myteam. The great part of the week was that it was intown and we didn’t have to drive or fly anywhere. The tournament was played at Shula’s in Miami Lakes.
The team played the practice round on Thursdaymorning just to get a feel for the course. Since it’s our home course it was a very easy process. I didn’t get to play the entire practice round due to a wrist injury that occurred during practice on Tuesday. That night our team hostedthe tournament banquet where my team and a few othersfrom UM sat at the biggest table I have ever seen.Athletic director Paul Dee made an appearance andwelcomed everyone to the event, but by far thehighlight of the night was the sundae bar at the end.
On Friday morning we had a 7:30 shotgun start. Theteam played pretty poorly. None of us could getanything going all day. We shot a 320 which put us ina disappointing 4th place, behind Rollins College,Florida State, and the University of South Florida. After, the round the team practiced and tried to getready for the next two days. We knew that we weren’tout of it and that we could still pull off a win. Fordinner that night we went to this Italian Restauranton Main street and chilled for a few hours.
Saturday, morning we went off at 8am andgot things going early. We shot a 297 team total withboth Tina and Camilla shooting 71. I shot a 76 andJasmine 79 to round out the top 4. We moved into atie for 2nd with USF behind Rollins. That night ourteam had its annual dinner at Shula’s Steakhouse whichwas fabulous. After, dinner we went back to our roomsto change our clocks so we could wake up bright andearly the next day to win the golf tournament.
An hour less sleep doesn’t seem like that much but itis when you are at a golf tournament. We woke up thenext morning and it was still dark out when we headedto the range to warm up. When we headed out on thecourse a 8 it was finally light. The day didn’t seemto go our way although we all wanted to win more thananybody at the tournament. Some things just aren’tmeant to be. As a team we shot a 307 to finish thetournament in 3rd with Rollins winning and SouthFlorida beating us by 1 stoke. Camilla played inher last State Championship and finished in a solid3rd place.
This was the last tournament of the regular seasonfor us and the last tournament for Camillaand Jasmine not including post season play which willstart in 2 weeks with the Big East Championship. Hopefully we played well enough this week that we will qualify for the Regional tournament in just over a month. So with the end of our official season I look forward to keeping you updated on our post season play. Go Canes!!!
