Charles' Win Highlights 77th Clyde Little Texas Relays

April 2, 2004

Freshman Tabia Charles (Pickering, Ontario) won the long jump with an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 6.27 meters (20-07.00) to highlight Friday’s action at the 77th Clyde Little Texas Relays in Austin, Texas.

Charles, who earned All-America honors in the long jump and triple jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships earlier this season, won despite competing in her first outdoor competition this year.

Two other UM freshman, Brenda Faluade (Katy, Texas) and Amy Seward (Virginia Beach, Va.) also qualified for NCAA Regional competition in the long jump. Faluade finished fifth with a leap of 6.17 meters (20-03.00) while Seward took seventh with a jump of 6.03 meters (19-09.50)

In the 100-meter hurdles, sophomore All-American Dominique Darden (Harrisburg, Pa.) finished second in her heat with a time of 13.77 seconds qualifying her for the NCAA Regional Championships. She has now qualified in both the 100-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles.

Both of Miami’s relays advanced to Saturday’s finals. The 4×100-meter relay finished second in its heat with a time of 44.75 seconds while the 4×400-meter relay won its preliminary heat with a time of 3:37.10.
