Jan. 5, 2004

CORAL GABLES, Fla.-The University of Miami women’s basketball team is tied for 24th in the latest Associated Press poll released Monday afternoon.

Miami (12-0) off to its best start in school history received 97 votes to break into the Top-25 for the first time since the 1992-93 season. The Hurricanes ended the 1992-93 season ranked 20th by the AP.

“We are really excited, it is so nice for our team to be recognized for all their hard work,” said head coach Ferne Labati. “The bar has been raised, we will continue to work hard and look forward to the challenges that lie ahead.”

The Hurricanes are tied with Baylor (12-1) for 24th place.

Miami is one of four undefeated Division I teams remaining, including No. 2 Texas Tech (14-0), No. 6 Minnesota (12-0) and No. 16 Virginia Tech (12-0).

The Hurricanes will attempt to improve to 13-0 when they face BIG EAST opponent Villanova Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in Villanova, Pa.

Miami has lost seven straight to the Wildcats and has not beaten VU since a 67-64 victory in Coral Gables during the 1997-98 season.

The game will be broadcast live on WVUM-90.5 FM or via the internet at hurricanesports.com.
