CORAL GABLES, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami volleyball team held its annual preseason Orange and Green scrimmage on Tuesday afternoon at the Knights Sports Complex.

The Hurricanes divided into two teams, Orange and Green, and played four games in the intrasquad scrimmage. The fourth game was a 15-point rally simulation. The Hurricane coaching staff rotated players to group different teams together before the start of each game.

2003 BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year, Valeria Tipiana, appeared to pick up exactly where she left off in 2002. The junior outside hitter had an impressive performance from the service line posting three consecutive service aces and four total in the second game, while totaling 14 kills in the four games.

Junior outside hitter Elizabeth Tyson made her mark as one of the Hurricanes’ leader with 11 kills during the match.

Senior outside hitter Leyre Santaella Sante also looked impressive during the scrimmage. Santaella Sante totaled 10 kills and showcased the ability that made her the 2002 Atlantic Sun Player of the Year last year at Central Florida.

Newcomer Jill Robinson and sophomore Margie Young also had productive outings from the setter position, combining for 79 total assists.

UM will kick off the 2003 season on Friday, August 29 with the annual Hurricane Invitational when they host Manhattan at 7 p.m.
