UM Track Teams Hold PAL Clinic
Dec. 6, 2003
Coral Gables, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – Members of the University of Miami men’s and women’s track and field teams held a clinic for approximately 60 elementary and middle school age children Saturday morning at Cobb Stadium in Coral Gables, FL.
The clinic was part of the “Join a Team, Not a Gang” program, sponsored by the University of Miami and the Miami-Dade Police Department, which helps Dade Country youths find positive alternatives to gangs.
“These programs are extremely important because it gives a lot of Dade County children exposure to sports that they would not normally have access too,” said UM head men’s track and field coach Mike Ward. “It is also very important for our student-athletes to get involved with the community and show these children the importance of making positive decisions in their lives.”
The children were part of an after-school tutoring and recreational program at Carol City Park and Goulds Park and were taught the fundamentals of several track and field events including sprinting, hurdling, throwing the shot put, long jumping and triple jumping.
Saturday’s clinic marked the second straight year, and the third time in the last four years, that the University of Miami men’s and women’s track and field programs and the Miami-Dade Police Department have joined together to hold the clinic.
