Hurricanes Face Tough Weekend at the Wildcat Classic

The University of Miami volleyball team will travel to Tucson, Ariz. this weekend to take part in the Wildcat Classic hosted by the University of Arizona.

The Hurricanes are slated to face two nationally ranked teams, No. 10 Arizona and No. 20 Santa Clara, at the three-day tournament.

“We have a huge weekend in front of us,” Head Coach Nicole Lantagne Welch said. “We are playing four excellent opponents and we are going to have to take it one match at a time. We have two teams that are nationally ranked and this will give us an opportunity to show how good we really are.”

Miami (3-0) enters the tournament after sweeping the field at the Hurricane Invitational last weekend. The Hurricanes junior outside hitter Valeria Tipiana led in the three victories and was named the tournament MVP. Tipiana posted a .395 hitting percentage in 10 games and totaled 43 kills in the three matches.

The Hurricanes will kick off the weekend on Thursday, Sept. 4 with Rhode Island at 12:30 p.m. The Rams (1-3) enter the weekend coming off a win against Southwest Missouri State, 3-1.

UM will return to action on Friday, Sept. 5 to face San Diego State (2-1). SDSU defeated UC Riverside and Hofstra after falling to Rice in their season opener at the San Diego State Invitational this past weekend.

The Hurricanes will wrap up the weekend facing No. 10 Arizona (2-1) on Friday, Sept. 5 at 7:30 p.m. and No. 20 Santa Clara (1-1) on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 10 a.m. Arizona fell to No. 21 Notre Dame this past weekend before upsetting fifth-ranked Pepperdine at the Sheraton Four Points Pepperdine Classic. Santa Clara split their first two matches of the season, losing to Pacific and downing cross-town rival San Jose State.
