Coral Gables, FL (hurricanesports.com) – Former University of Miami diver Michelle Davison has been named the NCAA Florida Woman of the Year. Davison is now eligible for the NCAA National Woman of the Year Award, which will be announced on November 2 at the NCAA Woman of the Year dinner in Indianapolis.

The NCAA selected 50 Woman of the Year state winners for 2002. Forty-nine states and the District of Columbia were represented. Wyoming was the only state from which there were no nominations.

The NCAA Woman of the Year Award honors outstanding female student-athletes who have excelled in academics, athletics and community leadership. This year, 342 student-athletes were nominated, with 175 of those nominations from Division I, 62 from Division II and 105 from Division III.

The state winners this year represented 16 different sports. Davison was the only selection that competed in Swimming and Diving.

Davison graduated in May with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Management and Organization and is currently working towards a Master’s Degree in Communications at UM. Davison completed her undergraduate degree with 3.529 GPA. She has been a member of the Dean’s List, the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll and the BIG EAST Academic All-Star team.

A four-time All-American in the 1-meter (1999, 2002) and 3-meter (1999, 2002) springboard, Davison was honored as the BIG EAST Diver of the Year last season after winning the 1-meter competition and finishing third in the 3-meter at the Conference Championships.

She twice won the 3-meter at the US Diving Championships (1998, 2002) and in 2000 reached the finals of the 3-meter at the Olympic Games in Atlanta, where she finished 12th.

In addition to her work in the pool and in the classroom, Davison has worked hard in the community. She has served as a motivational speaker talking to school children in both South Carolina and Florida about a wide range of topics including dedication, hard work, sacrifice, maintaining a positive attitude, and the dangers of drug use.

She serves on various committees within US Diving and is a regular contributor to the US Diving Magazine. She has also worked with the Adopt-a-Pet program, and is involved with several mentor programs and church groups.
