UM Volleyball Team Preps For 2nd season

Aug. 23, 2002

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – The Hurricane women’s volleyball team continued to lay down the foundation for a second successful season with a scrimmage yesterday in the Knight Sports Complex on the University of Miami campus.

The “Green Team,” composed primarily of the team’s projected starters, won three of the five games against an “Orange Team” that included assistant coaches.

“I thought we had a very productive scrimmage, I thought we did a lot of nice things,” coach Nicole Lantegne Welch said. “We’re definitely playing better defense. We have a bigger block this year, which is going to really help our defense. I think they played very hard. I saw some really nice things out of players on both sides. We’re excited. We have a long way to go still, but we’re starting at a very high point.”

In their inaugural 2001-02 season, the Hurricanes went 17-7, with wins over Big East mainstays Pittsburgh (3-1) and St. John’s (3-0).

This season, UM will play a full Big East schedule, as well as regional rival Florida State. The Hurricanes’ open their season with an August 30 tournament at Wichita State, Kansas. Their first home match is against Howard Sept. 6 on the Coral Gables campus. The Hurricanes’ first conference game is Saturday, Sept. 28 at Boston College.
