May 14, 2002
Senior Gustavis Martin, one of Miami’s top track athletes, has been selected the December 2001 Academic All-Star after leading the Hurricanes off the track as well as on.
Martin has posted excellent grades in his business finance major, and his entire track career has been one of great accomplishments. As a junior, Martin recorded the best times during the indoor season in the 55-, 60-, and 200-meter hurdles. He recorded two victories in the 55-meter hurdles, finished second in the 60-meter hurdles, and seventh in the 200-meters at the BIG EAST indoor championships. He also excelled in the outdoor championships, posting top scores in the 110 and 200-meters. In the UM relay, he set a BIG EAST Championship record with a time of 40.40.
In his sophomore year, Martin posted the best times again during the 55- and 60-meter hurdles and achieved fourth place in the BIG EAST Championships in the 110-meter hurdles. As a freshman, Martin posted Miami’s top times in the indoor 55-meter dash and the outdoor 110- and 400-meter hurdles.
A younger Martin led his high school team to consecutive fourth-place finishes at the Florida State Track meet and was a state and district champion in the 110-hurdles and 330 intermediate hurdles.
