Men's & Women's Tennis Advance To Championship Finals

Coral Gables, Fla. – In a repeat of the 2001 BIG EAST Championships, Notre Dame and Miami will battle for both the men’s and women’s titles. The women’s championship match is set for 9 a.m. on Sunday at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center, while the men will play at noon.

MEN

No. 1 seed Notre Dame swept No. 5 Rutgers, 4-0, getting straight-set victories at No. 4, 5 and 6 singles. The Irish have played in the title match every year since they joined the league in 1996 and are in search of their third championship.

In the noon match, Miami began strongly by taking the doubles point. Virginia Tech roared back to a 3-2 lead with victories at No. 1, 3 and 5 singles. The Hurricanes rebounded to win the final two points of the match with victories by Tomas Smid and Jose Lieberman, both in third-set tiebreakers. The Hokies will face Rutgers in the third place match.

In the final match of the day, West Virginia defeated Boston College, 4-0, for fifth place.

WOMEN

After a bye on day one, No. 1 seed Notre Dame defeated No. 4 Boston College, 4-1. The Irish are the defending champions and have won four titles over the past six years.

Miami set the tone with an 8-0 victory at No. 1doubles and went on to defeat No. 3 Virginia Tech, 4-0. The Hokies and Boston College will play to decide third place.

In the fifth place match, Syracuse beat Rutgers, 4-0.
