Stefan Ahrens Takes 4th in 1-Meter at NCAA's
Athens, Ga. (hurricanesports.com) – Senior diver Stefan Ahrens took fourthplace in the 1-meter springboard competition in the first day of the 2002 Men’sNCAA Swimming & Diving Championships at the Gabrielsen Natatorium on the campusof the University of Georgia in Athens.
Ahrens (Lichtenhagen-Dorf, Germany) boosted his finals score to 363.45 from aprelim of 329.90 to finish in fourth place. Troy Dumais of Texas won the eventwith a score of 390.35.
Ahrens finished fourth in the 1-meter event at the Zone B Diving Championshipsto qualify for nationals. He also took fourth in the 3-meter at the BIG EAST Championships.Ahrens competed in his first Olympic games in 2000 in the 3-meter springboard,finishing ninth as a member of the German Olympic Team.
Freshman Miguel Velazquez (Mexico City, Mexico) finished 11th with a score of308.35. He was followed by Junior Kyle Prandi (Strongsville, Ohio) in 13th (293.25)and senior Imre Lengyel in 23rd (272.55 ).
The quartet of UM divers will compete in the 3-meter event on Friday and concludewith the platform competition on Saturday.
