Miami Dominates Diving at BIG EAST Championships
Coral Gables, Fla. –The University of Miami maintained its status as a diving powerhouse withdominant performances at the BIG EAST Championships in Uniondale, N.Y.
The Hurricane men, under the direction of head diving coach RandyAbleman, swept the top four spots in the men’s 3-meter over 14 other competitors.
Senior ImreLengyel (Budapest, Hungary) captured first with 665.8 points. Junior KylePrandi (Strongsville, Ohio) was second with 652.65 points, freshman MiguelVelazquez was third with 621.0 and senior StefanAhrens (Lichtenhagen-Dorf, Germany) rounded out the Miami contingent in fourthplace (582.25).
For the UM women, senior MichelleDavison (Columbia, S.C.) won the 1-meter competition with 300.65 points. SophomoreMelanieRinaldi (MteNord, Canada) was third (267.35) and KatieBeth Bryant (Chatham, Ill.) finished seventh (244.60).
Former Miami diving great JennyKeim holds the meet record in the 1-meter with 454.18 points set in 1999.
Overall, the Miami women’s swimming and diving team captured second place outof 13 schools in the first day of the BIG EAST Championships with a total of 173points behind leader Notre Dame at 243. The UM men were 11th with 29 points.
The BIG EAST Championships continue through February 23rd.
