Van Rooijen Leads Women Swimmers to Wins

Jacksonville, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – The Miami swimming team competedat the University of North Florida in Jacksonville on Friday. The College of Charlestonslipped by the men’s team, 93-89, while the UM women posted victories over NorthFlorida, 129-97, and the College of Charleston, 132-62.
Miami’s Manon van Rooijen (Westdorpe, Holland) continued her impressive sophomoreseason by winning the women’s 200-yard medley (2:07.25) and the 100-yard backstroke(59.42). Her performance in the 100-yard back was just 1.84 seconds short of theMiami school record set by Amy Bosseler (57.58).
Junior Elaine Schwartz (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) won the 1000-yard freestyle (10:33.71).Schwartz also finished fifth in the 200-yard medley (2:16.18).
Freshman Kristy MacLennan (Toronto, Canada) took second in the 50-yard freestyle(25.46) and fourth in the 200-yard medley (2:12.53). Sophomore Courtney Caples(Tuscaloosa, Ala.) was second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:08.80.
Freshman Tammy Watts (Centennial, Colo.) finished third in the 100-yard backstroke(1:01.10).
In the relay events, the Miami women won the 200-yard freestyle (1:39.59) and200-yard medley (1:50.04).
For the Miami men’s swim team, senior Wesley Stoddard (Huntsville, Ala.) tookfirst in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:21.44) and 500-yard freestyle (4:49.89) whilefinishing second in the 200-yard medley (1:58.96).
Junior Kevin Kerrick (Miami, Fla.) won the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.16) and the100-yard freestyle (48.39).
Senior John Stevens (Portland, Maine) was second in the 100-yard backstroke (57.77)and third in the 200-yard medley (2:03.37). Junior Ryan Rykaczewski (SatelliteBeach, Fla.) won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 53.78) and finished secondin the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.84).
Freshman Joshua Laban (Virgin Islands) won the 100-yard breaststroke with a timeof 1:00.89.
The Hurricanes next travel to Boca Raton to face Florida Atlantic on February2nd.
