Volleyball Begins Four-Match Road Swing at Florida Memorial
Coral Gables, Fla. – (www.hurricanesports.com) – Miami volleyball travelsto Opa Locka, Fla. for a match against the Florida Memorial Lions Friday eveningat 7:30 p.m.
The contest begins a four-match road swing for the Hurricanes (5-4).
After Florida Memorial, Miami travels to Tallahassee to play Florida A&Mon Monday, October 1st, at 7 p.m. The Hurricanes then battle rival Florida Stateon Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. in a match broadcast on the Sunshine Network.
After the match against the Seminoles, UM visits Florida International for a matchon October 5th at 7:30 p.m. The contest, originally scheduled for September 14th,was rescheduled after the terrorist attacks on September 11th.
After nine matches, junior outside hitter Marcela Gamarra (Medellin, Colombia)leads the Hurricanes with 297 attacks for the season with 149 kills. Gamarra averages4.66 kills per game.
Freshman setter Mallorey James (Tucson, Ariz.) has 217 assists for the season(9.04 per game).
Defensively, freshman outside hitter Jamie Grass (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) leadsthe team in total digs with 114 (3.56 per game). Senior middle blocker KristiSprinkel (Laguna Beach, Calif.) has 19 total blocks (six solo). Freshman middleblocker Sandra Totten (Thermal, Calif.) is second on the team in both total digs(90, 2.81 per game) and blocks (15, five solo).
Both Grass and Sprinkel have 11 serving aces with Gamarra scoring nine.
Freshman Valeria Tipiana (Lima, Peru) ranks among the top three players in threestatistical categories. Tipiana has 62 kills (2.07 per game), 26 assists (0.87per game) and 13 blocks (four solo).
After completing its longest string of away matches of the season, Miami returnsto Coral Gables to begin its longest home stand. The Hurricanes begin a four-matchrun at the Knight Sports Complex by hosting the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on October11th at 7 p.m.
