Miami Welcomes Volleyball Back to Campus With Wins

Coral Gables, Fla. – (www.hurricanesports.com) – Miami rewarded its homecrowd Friday afternoon with two wins in the inaugural Hurricane Invitational atthe Knight Sports Complex. The Hurricanes swept Long Island, 3-0 (30-24, 30-22& 30-16) in the first match. In the second match, Miami beat Wofford, 3-0(30-24, 30-24 & 30-15).
The Hurricanes (3-2) wasted little time in asserting themselves on their homecourt. In the first match against Long Island, junior outside hitter Marcela Gamarra(Medellin, Colombia) had a team-high 15 kills with an attack percentage of .480.Kristi Sprinkel (Laguna Beach, CA) and Jamie Grass (Manhattan Beach, CA) eachcontributed 10 kills.
Defensively, the Hurricanes were paced by freshman Sandra Totten (Thermal, CA)with 13 digs. With the win, Miami celebrated its first home victory in almost20 years. The Hurricanes are fielding their first team since the 1981 season.
Prior to the 6 p.m. match against Wofford, Miami celebrated the return of volleyballto the UM campus with a ceremonial ‘First Serve’. University of Miami PresidentDonna Shalala, Athletic Director Paul Dee and Head Volleyball Coach Nicole Lantagnejoined former UM volleyball players on the court for the serve.
Miami then turned its attention to Wofford and handed the Lady Terriers theirfirst loss of the 2001 season with a 3-0 sweep. Marcella Gamarra again led theteam in scoring with 17 kills while Sandra Totten scored 10 times. Gamarra andTotten also led the team in digs with 10 and nine respectively.
In the other matches played Friday evening, UAB defeated LIU, 3-0 (30-22, 30-25& 30-12) and Wofford, 3-1 (30-32, 30-28, 30-26 & 31-29).
Miami returns to action Saturday morning in a 10 a.m. match against UAB (5-1).The Hurricane Invitational ends with a match pitting the Long Island Blackbirdsagainst the Wofford Lady Terriers.
