Women's Rowing Dominates State Championship

Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – The University of Miami varsity women’s rowing team swept every race it entered at the Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta this past weekend in Tampa.
Heading into the “State Championship” regatta as the top-seeds in the varsity eight, JV eight and varsity four races, the UM women live up to their placement against a field boats, including Embry-Riddle, Barry, Florida Tech, Jacksonville, Lynn, Rollins, Stetson, UCF, Florida and Tampa.
Led by the varsity eight, racing the “Liz Dee”, Miami finished nearly eight seconds ahead of second-place UCF “B” with a time of 6:21.6. The Golden Knights came across the finish line with a time of 6:29.2, followed by Jacksonville (6:34.3), Florida Tech, Stetson, Florida and Barry. The women’s varsity eight consisted of coxswain Jenny Lee, Jenny Krawec, Monika Manios, Jacqui Julien, Dorien Ten Have, Amanda Turner, Bridget Gallagher, Yianna Reizakis and Marijka VanderPol.
The JV eight also finished first, nine seconds ahead of UCF (6:47.8) and Florida Tech (7.27.8) with a time of 6:38.5. UM’s second varsity eight consisted of coxswain Meg Venezia, Bernadette Lack, Jordanna Heywood, Ananda Chou, Caroline Stewart, Stephanie Tilley, Trisha Blackwell, Maggie Knuth and Dorothy Clay.
The varsity four “A” boat finished first in its race, eight seconds ahead of Jacksonville, with a time of 6:58.7. The Dolphins recorded a time of 7:06.8, followed by UCF (7:09.8). The UM “B” boat finished fourth with a time of 7:15.9. The varsity four “A” boat consisted of coxswain Cina Quezada, Krawec, Julien, Ten Have and Turner. The varsity four “B” featured coxswain Jenny Lee, Manios, Gallagher, Reizakis and VanderPol.
Lindsey Tarabula and Cathy Dunnet also claimed a state championship winning the varsity pair race with a time of 7:47.3, ahead of UCF “A” (8:21.4).
In the JV four race, the UM “B” boat (7:24.0) came in first ahead of the UM “A” boat (7:27.9), followed by UCF (7:40.5) in the third. The “B” boat consisted of coxswain Tiffany Mecca, Stewart, Chou, Blackwell and Tilley. The “A” featured Venezia (coxswain), Lack, Heywood, Knuth and Clay.
On the men’s side, the Hurricanes recorded two first-place finishes, two second-place and one third-place.
The JV eight and four won their races, respectively, while the varsity eight and four took second. The varsity pair claimed third.
University of Miami Rowing returns to action next weekend, Saturday and Sunday, April 21-22 in the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta on Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, TN.
