UM Golfers Take Fifth At State Championships

Miami Lakes, FL – The University of Miami women’s golf team shot a final 311 and finished in fifth-place with a three round total of 909 at the RYDER/Florida Women’s Collegiate Golf Championships held at Don Shula’s Golf Club and Resort in Miami Lakes, FL.

Florida posted a three-day total of 895 to win the team championship for the 16th time in the 31-year history of the event. The Gators, who take the state title for the first time since 1998, recorded the lowest winning team score since 1996.

Individually it was Florida International’s Michelle Simpson taking home the Ryder Championship. Simpson recorded a three-round score of 214 to finish one stroke ahead of Louise Wright of Florida State.

The win is the fifth of the season for Simpson who becomes the first FIU player to win the state title since M.B. Zimmerman in 1983.

The All-State team, which consists of the top-5 individual finishers, included Simpson, Wright, Jeanne Cho (Florida), Rachel Bell (Florida Southern) and Kim Tudor (UCF).

The Hurricanes were led by sophomore Dominique Gagnon (Dominican Republic) who recorded a final round 78 to finish in a tie for tenth with a three-round total of 225.

Miami returns to action April 5-8 at the Wake Forest Invitational in Greensboro, NC.
