Miami's Men's and Women's Track Team Compete in 1st Day of BIG EAST Indoor Championships

Syracuse, NY (hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami’s men’s track team finishes in 11th place (through five events) and the women’s track teams finishes in a tie for 7th place (through six events) after the first day of competition at the 2001 BIG EAST Indoor Track Championships in Syracuse, NY.

The men completed the day placing one first-place finish, one second-place finish and one third-place finish. The women tallied two first-place finishes and three second-place finishes.

Senior Guy Emry (Monument, CO) recorded 3613 points in the pentathalon and a third place finish incorporating an event-best throw in the shot put (13.35 m, 43’09.75).

Sophomore Phillip Buchanon (Lehigh, FL) placed first in the 60-meter dash preliminary with a time of 6.85, with freshman Willis McGahee (Miami, FL – Central) placing sixth (6.94) and senior Daryl Jones placing 12th (7.05).

Junior Gus Martin (Miami, FL – Northwestern) finished second in the 60-meter hurdles preliminary with a time of 8.00.

Sophomore Gina Harris (Philadelphia, PA) placed second in the finals of the women’s long jump with a jump of 6.07 m (19’11.00), finishing behind Seton Hall’s Nolle Graham (6.39m, 20’11.75).

Sophomore Saraque Whittaker (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) and senior Natalie Watson (Clarendon, Jamaica) placed first and second in the 500-meter dash preliminary with times of 1:11.74 and 1:12.95 respectively.

Sophomore Patricia Pearson (Jacksonville, FL) and Watson finished first and second in the 800-meter dash with times of 2:11.27 and 2:15.60 respectively.

The championships will resume at the Carrier Dome tomorrow at 10:30 a.m.
