Hurricanes Win Four Events At Husky Invitational

Boston, MA – The University of Miami men’s track and field team took first in four events, including a sweep of the 55-meter dash, and finished fourth (70 points) at the Husky Invitational in Boston, MA.
Rutgers won the team event with a score of 127 points while host Northeastern took second (111.50 points) and Southern Connecticut finished third (72 points).
Sophomore Phillip Buchanon (Lehigh, FL), a defensive back on the Hurricanes’ football team, led the UM sweep of the 55-meters finishing first with a time of 6.41. Buchanon edged out teammate Andre Johnson (Miami Senior) who took second (6.47) while Hurricane senior Joseph Mbayen (Paris, France) finished third (6.51).
Mbayen also performed well in the field recording a first-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 7.24 meters (23-09.00).
Junior Gus Martin (Miami Northwestern) continued his strong start this season winning his second consecutive 55-meter hurdle event. Martin, who finished first in the 55-meters hurdles at the Florida Invitational on January 13, recorded a time of 7.56 in winning the Husky Invitational.
The Hurricanes also finished first in the shot put as UM freshman Vincent Wilfork (Lantana, FL) won in his first collegiate meet with a throw of 16.63 meters (54-06.75). Wilfork is also a defensive lineman on the Miami football team.
