Bogomolova, Smith Win Titles At Hurricane Fall Classic

Coral Gables, FL – University of Miami senior Katia Bogomolova (Moscow, Russia) won the Flight B singles title while freshman Abby Smith (Chicago, IL) won the Flight C title at the 2000 Hurricane Fall Classic held at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Coral Gables, FL.

Bogomolova, the tournament’s second seed, knocked off teammate and fourth-seeded Lauren Scaglione 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 Sunday morning to win the Flight B Championship.

Bogomolova also took home the Flight B doubles title. Bogomolova teamed with sophomore Igna de Villiers (Capetown, South Africa) to defeat the Florida State team of Jessica Balbuena and Christina Denny 8-4. Bogomolova and de Villiers were the tournament’s top seed while the Florida State tandem was seeded second.

In the Flight C singles final, Smith, seeded No. 3, upset de Villiers, the tournament’s top-seed, in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.

Junior Marcy Hora (Delray Beach, FL), rebounded from Friday’s opening round loss in Flight B singles to win three straight matches and take home the Flight B singles consolation title.
