Hurricanes Take Second In The A Invitational

CORAL GABLES, Fla.–UM senior Scott Gentles (Atlanta, GA) finishedfirst in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.76) and the 1650-yard freestyle(16:21.63) to secure the “A” Invitational Male Individual PointsChampionship Sunday, October 22 at Norman Whitten Student Union Pool.Gentles was third place and trailed teammate Wesley Stoddard (Huntsville,AL), 26-22, going into Sunday’s competition. After narrowly defeatingStoddard in both the 200-yard freestyle and the 1650-yard freestyle Gentlesfinished second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:13.73) and eighth in the100-yard backstroke (58.51) to accumulate 48 points and edge Stoddard byfour points.
In the women’s field Elaine Schwartz (Mt. Laurel, NJ) took second inthe Female Individual Points race with 52 points. Vanessa Duenas (MiamiMetro Aquatic Club) won the event with 73 points.Schwartz finished the meet strong with a first-place finish in the 200-yardbreaststroke (2:24.35), a second place finish in the 200-yard butterfly(2:07.81) and top ten finishes in both the 100-yard backstroke 5th,(1:01.97) and the 200-yard freestyle 7th, (30.33).The University of Miami men’s and women’s swimmers combined for 511 pointsplacing them second out of 28 teams behind The Miami Metro Aquatic SwimmingClub with 626 points.
The University of Miami Men’s and Women’s Swim team returns to action onSaturday, November 4 against Indian River Community College in a dual meetstarting at 1:00 p.m. at the Norman Whitten Student Union Pool. Admission isfree.
